Do all Canadian provinces have a similar legal regime?
No. The legal regime in all provinces, except Qubec, is the Anglo-Saxon based common law. The province of Qubec is governed by a civil law regime. The substantive law for the province of Qubec is set out in the Civil Code of Qubec (CCQ). The CCQ applies to all situations, subject to specific statute law. For example, while the administration of employer-sponsored pension plans will generally be governed by the Supplemental Pension Plans Act, specific issues – such as fiduciary obligations – will also require the application of CCQ provisions.
