Do 9 volt batteries explode if you put positive+negative?
In a situation called a “dead short” (positive connected directly to negative with a wire large enough to carry all available power) can have a “steam” explosion. When a battery discharges, current flows. If there is any resistance to that current flow, then heat is going to be produced. If enough heat is produced, then you can get a “steam” explosion where some of the internal material vaporizes. If you look at the packaging of most batteries they say not to discharge rapidly, or attempt to charge (if it is not a rechargeable battery), or you may get an “explosion”. It will probably not be violent, but it will be hot out-gassing that could harm you, or things near the battery. ANY electrical device can produce great heat if not handled properly. And a 9V battery can hurt you if discharged too rapidly. Ron.
