Do 8mm video cassettes adhere to an international television standard?

0

Australia employs the PAL television standard and the U.S. employs NTSC. The two systems are incompatible with each other. However, magnetic tape doesn’t care how its magnetized. Therefore, an 8mm video cassette designed for NTSC will work on a PAL camcorder. The difference is the length of tape. An NTSC 8mm video cassette contains less tape for a given time period than its PAL counterpart. So, if you use a 120-minute NTSC video cassette with a PAL camcorder, the total recording time will be less than 120 minutes because of recording speed differences. Also, keep in mind that in order to play the recording you must also have a PAL monitor or TV connected to your camcorder.
