Do 2 mice or 2 rats make better pets?Why?
I have had all sorts of small animals for pets – mice, gerbils, rats, guinea pigs…my sister even had a hedgehog home from school for the summer. My favorite set of pets have always been my rats. They are much smarter than mice and can be easily trained (with some consistency and encouragement). My last set of rats was a set of three females. (I think the key is to get them young, and to make sure they are littermates). I didn’t buy them, some friends at college had mated their rats and needed homes for the young rats. My girls all got along really well together. Rats can be “litter” trained – they tend to go in one spot in the cage and can be trained to go in a small container in the corner. This makes cleaning much easier, as you can concentrate on the “litter box” and just do some minimal upkeep on the rest of the cage. In my opinion, female rats are less smelly than male rats.
