difference in the meanings of two words
"Chance" means that there's a possibility of an event. It's more general and encompassing. There may be factors involved that affect the probability of something happening that would affect the "chance" of an event, but it can also be thought of as independent.
Whereas with the term "contingency", it always refers to the possibility of an event that is dependent on other factors. The event is contingent on something else.
For example:
"There's a chance I will go to the party." (General statement; factors affecting probability are variable or unknown. Outcome is indeterminable.)
"Whether or not I go to the party is contingent on whether Brad goes." (More specific; the probability of event is specifically dependent on stated factor. If factor is met then outcome is determined.)
