Didn Warner Brothers re-release The Black Album seven years later?
Seven years after it’s recording and much to the chagrin of Prince, then an attempt by him to fulfill a contract, Warner Brothers re-issued his much mythologized The Black Album. On November 22nd, 1994, the re-release of The Black Album was first advertised as “available for a limited time at 99.99% discount”, (Actually a 99.84% discount). Then soon became out-of-print just 2 months later. According to Musician Magazine, more than 250,000 copies of The Black Album were again sold in CD and LP format by January, which doesn’t include Cassette duplications that have moved through the underground bootleg pipeline. Some copies have fetched as much as $500.00. The official version of the CD was pulled from music stores and was made no longer available by January 28th, 1995. The album featured all 10 original tracks and the original artwork. But as of today, The Black Album will remain as an OOP release and will be a very collectible item for years to come.
