Didn many Secular thinkers believe that Science would replace Religion?
Yes, it was characteristic of many enlightenment philosophers as well as classical sociologists and psychologists to predict that advancing human knowledge would replace the world’s “primitive religious myths.” They believed a Scientific Priesthood would provide guidance based upon research and experimentation. Psychology and psychiatry are beginning to “get religion” in a sense because they are being forced to recognize the spiritual dimension of life. However, they are still uniformly opposed to certain Christian beliefs particularly those dealing with Sin and Guilt.
