Didn Bush win by 3.5 million votes?
Nobody knows how many voters actually chose to vote for Bush. But that would be a misleading number, anyway. In the U.S., presidents are not elected by popular vote. In order to win, a candidate must be awarded the most electoral votes. Bush’s announced electoral vote margin was 286 to Kerry’s 251. If Kerry had been awarded the 20 electoral votes from the state of Ohio, where evidence shows he was the true victor, Kerry would have been declared the winner with 271 electoral votes to Bush’s 266. If the electoral votes of other states where Bush’s declared victories are in doubt were awarded to Kerry, Kerry’s margin of victory would have been even greater.
