I didn’t know him but many of the students did. One student who adored professor Librescu tried to get him to jump out of the window, but he wouldn’t because he was barricading the door to keep the gunman from entering. The student is still too shattered to talk about it. On the second night after the tragedy, students and members of the Jewish community joined us at the JCC for a memorial gathering. Professor Librescu’s wife attended, as did many faculty members. Q: Were you close with anyone who was killed? A: I knew the French professor Jocelyne Couture-Nowak because I teach her daughter art. We’d often talk when she picked up her child. They had recently moved to a new home and she was at my home just six days before the tragedy talking to me about the garden she was planning.
