Did vietnamese like the french?
The Vietnamese people during French’s control like them, dislike them, and were neutral all at the same time. Bao Dai who was the Vietnamese king of the time controlled south Vietnam, but it was obvious that he was the French’s puppet. He basically lived in France and rarely visited Vietnam. Therefore southern VN was more influenced by the French. Of course since it was a period of imperialism, most Vietnamese people were not treated equally as the French, which resulted in hatred. There are people who did not like how the French government operated Vietnam such at Ho Chi Minh (HCM). Overall I do not think the Vietnamese people really hated the French, especially those of higher middle class. They just weren’t happy with the government. Comparing to the French, the Japanese did much worse. And the American arms killed much more people during the war than the French ever did.
