Did USA Rugby make a mistake in trying to fix something that wasn’t broken?
NM: First of all, no decision has been made to get rid of the National High School Championships. That was a case of some people jumping to conclusions. That said, I do think we have to be careful not to go one step forward and two steps back. In the end, it was a clumsy decision. We need to take our time making these kinds of decisions and have those ideas communicated better because this one was not at all clear. Last year we held two different championships, and established the idea of the single-school teams. I felt that was going in the right direction. Now it seems that the committees have pulled back a bit from that. What they’re trying to do is give U19 clubs an avenue to phase into single-school status. It’s not supposed to be so they can load up on a bunch of outside players. The spirit of it was to bring more clubs into the single-school fold.
