Some Presidents did support certain terrorist organizations before 9/11 because they saw good terrorists and bad terrorists, as ridiculous as that sounds. The most notable supporter of terrorist groups is Ronald Reagan, yet no one accuses the conservatives, who believe in the divinity of Reagan, as supporting terrorism, yet somehow, liberals are accused of it all of the time…
No, nobody has ever supported terrorists or terrorist organizations. I think you’re probably confused because there is a lot of finger-pointing about the US using al Qaeda as a conduit for aid to the Afghani people during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. You can translate “al Qaeda” as “the base,” and at the time they were a significant base of logistic support for the freedom-fighters trying to eject the Soviets from their country. The Soviets may have thought of them as terrorists at the time, but nobody else did. It’s a bit childish to use that sort of argument, but that’s where American politics seems to be these days, with name-calling and half-truths.
