Did Tom Morello invent the scratching guitar solo?
As far as creating it, it’s debatable, just like the debate over Eddie Van Halen inventing tapping (he didn’t) but he definitely made it popular and a lot of bands ripped him off since. If you want to do it, it’s not as simple as just scratching the strings. You’ve got to use your toggle switch so one pickup is rolled off, one is on and flicking between them shuts the sound on and off. Then you’ve got to flick that rhythmically while scratching the strings with the other hand, using the pitch changes you get from different parts of the strings to add character.
