Did The Winter Storm That Hit The Northeastern US On 15 March Cause Delays In Air Travel?
The winter snow and ice storm that pounded the Northeastern United States on 15-16 March wreaked havoc for air travellers, especially those departing from New York’s John F. Kennedy (JFK) Airport. Over 3,600 flights were cancelled across the country, affecting major airlines, such as US Airways, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue and American Airlines. JetBlue alone cancelled about 400 of its flights. The worst of the delays occurred from the late evening of 15 March to 16 March, late in the morning. Some passengers, such as those on a Cathay Pacific flight, reported that their flights were unable to take-off and that they had to sit in the aircraft, on the tarmac, from midnight to 9:30am. The total number of passengers who were made to wait for up to 9 hours on airplanes at JFK was reported to be several hundred.
