Did the United States have any involvement in the economic collapse of South and Central America countries?
Chile under Pinochet was actually the lab test for the theories of Milton Friedman of the Chicago School of Economics, whose simplistic ideas- in fact nothing more than a re-statement of market theory as it stood in the 1920s- were later adopted by Reagan, Thatcher etc. Also, given most of South and Central America suffered under US-backed military dictators, it would be fair to blame economic stagnation on those who armed and planned the coups. Of course, without democracy these nations can’t move forward- having a military dictatorship means that naturally the opposition will be dominated by equally uncompromising militants (this is how Israel keep the Palestinians in check). So once the generals are thrown out, these poor countries just end up with lunatic left-wing regimes such as those of Castro or that fool in Venezeula. Another problem is the historic one of the powerful Spanish-derived classes ruling over the poor peasants whose blood is that of Mayans, Incas and Aztecs. Combin
