Did the trend towards authoritarianism begin under New Labour or was it there before?
I think it began with New Labour. There are really only two ways of tackling social problems. One is to empower parents to take responsibility and the other is for the State to assume the role of parent. Labour as a feminist left wing party will not promote “reactionary” things like strong fatherhood so it’s only alternative is to make the state be the father or big brother if you prefer.
