Yep. They were shipped from the coast, but many were actually from the interior. Basically anywhere from Senegal to Nigeria. Europeans didn’t control this part of the African coast, but set up forts where they would buy captives from local intermediaries and sell them to ship captains. They gave some of the money back (in the form of trade goods) to local warlords as “protection” and to keep the trade going. The death rate at sugar plantations in places like Jamaica and Barbados was so high that many thousands of slaves had to be transported over. So many that parts of Africa actually became depopulated!
