Did the plains indians use dogs for hunting before they had horses?
Dogs were used primarily as beasts of burden for the Plains Indians. The women would affix two poles to the dog and fashion a travois to be used to carry tentage, young children, and miscellaneous belongings. The warriors, as I have learned, would not customarily use dogs in their hunting except to carry the slain carcases back to the village. Incidentally, the Indian sign for dog was to move the right hand with forefinger and middlefinger in a V form across the chest. This signified travois.
