Did the original Apostles Creed include a part about Jesus descending into hell?
I believe the “original Apostle’s Creed” was in ancient Greek, so the answer must be qualified. You will find that the Greek word that appears in the creed at this point is best understood as “the place of the dead” (not “place of eternal torment”) and the essential meaning of the original phrase might be better or more literally rendered “entered the ‘dimension of existence’ the spirits of dead humans occupy” or something like that. 1 Peter 3:18-20 reads in part “He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, through whom also he went and preached to the spirits in prison” indicating that while his body was dead he communicated meaningfully with (peached to) other beings in that dimension. Having said all that, a quick web search suggest that people do not have conclusive proof that this phrase was included in the “original” version of the creed.
