Did the Church lock up Galileo Galilea for saying the World was round ?
Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) was an Italian astronomer and physicist. By observation and reasoning he argued that the planets revolve around the sun. He supported Copernicus’ theory of the solar system. Now, it needs to be pointed out that the prejudiced mock Christians who, up till then, thought that the earth was the centre of our universe, with all the stars, the sun and the moon revolving around the earth. Ah, but for centuries BEFORE Christianity appeared on the world’s scene, everyone else thought the same! Without telescopes and by observing the night sky, it did, indeed, look as if everything was moving around the earth. So if mockers are going to ridicule Christians, they’d better catch up fast and mock everyone else. What brought a gradual change in understanding was the irregular movement of planets. Some seemed to back-track at certain times. This was the Big Clue, and eventually it was worked out that not only were different planets moving at different speeds, but that the
