Well, at the first invasion, the Japanese defeated the Koreans easily since during this period the Korean military system was rather weak but heavily relied on the navy. Korea was in peaceful period and many Koreans didn’t focus their lives in the military but in academic studies. Japan was in a civil war, so Japanese are more experienced in fighting. Most Korean soldiers didn’t have proper training, Korean generals weren’t disciplined, and the armies were disorganized. Japanese armies were organized and they had rifles. Koreans heavily relied on Calvary, archery, and artillery. Calvary were easily defeated because of the rifles’ sound when fired which were able to scare the horses.
