Did the Acela Promo Backfire?
Amtrak announced that Acela Express ridership between NY and Boston had increased 13.1% after its fare reduction that began five weeks ago. This looks good on paper as an Amtrak ridership leap, but Amtrak watchers are noticing that their calculations strongly suggest that Amtrak lost revenue while it gained riders in this case, because the patronage gain does not appear to be enough to offset the lowering of fares.
