A suicide bomber has blown himself up at the entrance to the headquarters of Pakistan’s navy in Islamabad, killing a security officer, officials have said. Chief police commissioner Fazeel Asghar said two other security officers had been critically wounded. Two civilians, one a 6-year-old boy, were also hurt. He said the attacker had detonated his explosives when challenged at the gate of the navy complex at 1335 (0835 GMT). The Pakistani security forces have been targeted in a series of recent attacks. The attack came hours after President Barack Obama warned that Pakistan and the United States “share a common enemy” in Islamic terrorists as he announced plans to send 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan. Pakistan’s army has been fighting extremists in its northwestern frontier area and fears the U.S. surge will push more militants onto its territory. Wednesday’s explosion occurred after the attacker, who appeared to be a teenager, was stopped as he approached the iron gates at the heavily fortified complex and was asked to remove his jacket, police said.
