Did Spymob and N.E.R.D. ever butt heads much in the studio?
BP: It works because it’s this weird parallel line, because their collection and our collection, you start to see really similar things. Pharrell is real into Steely Dan, so he’ll really trip out on ’70s harmonies, so it all worked out pretty good, ’cause we’re all about it. I would love to do the same thing again. I hope it works out again. CG: John and Eric were already together when you came on board… BP: They went to college together, and played together then. They took a year off and all three of us got together, and it’s been the three of us for 11 years. And then the bass player is the most recent member, but he and I used to play hip-hop together back in ‘94. CG: What was it about your sound that made Spymob more complete? BP: I think where it all worked out, is the right colliding of styles and whatnot. I’m kind of a vintage geek – we all kinda are – and we’re all more apt to vintage sounds.
