CARBONDALE, Ill. — Eastern Illinois learned the hard way: You just don’t score first against Southern Illinois. After giving up a touchdown, the Salukis ran off 48 straight points Saturday to whip the Panthers 48-7 in the opening round of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. Deji Karim rushed for two touchdowns and redshirt freshman quarterback Paul McIntosh was part of three scores. “They got the upper hand right off the get-go,” Salukis coach Dale Lennon said. “We knew we would have our opportunities, too, and it’s just a matter of being ready when those opportunities present themselves. “We responded, and, I think, once we got the game tied up in the first quarter, there’s a little more of that comfort with what we were doing. CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois rushed for 323 yards to upend Eastern Illinois 48-7 Saturday in the first round of the FCS playoffs. Quarterback Paul McIntosh, who took over for the injured Chris Dieker at midseason, rushed for 155 yards and threw for 66 more for the Salukis (11-1). McIntosh threw for two touchdowns. Eastern Illinois (8-4) scored first, capitalizing on a Deji Karim fumble. Lorence Ricks ran 11 yards on a reverse to put the Panthers on top 7-0 at 11:42 of the first quarter. Karim tied it four minutes later on the first of his three touchdowns. Karim ran for 115 yards, the first time the Panthers had allowed anyone to rush for 100 yards. It was the ninth time this season Karim had cleared 100 yards. Eastern Illinois turned the ball over six times. Next Saturday, SIU will host William and Mary, which defeated Weber State.
