Did Roman rulers oppose Christians because of Christmas?
Until the fourth century, December 25th (now known as Christmas) was celebrated as the birthday of Sol Invictus, a god formerly known as Mithras. It was only at the time when Christianity was becoming dominant in the Roman Empire that the Church ruled that this day would henceforth be reserved as the day on which the birthday of Jesus would be celebrated.
