Some are arranged into animal shapes like a monkey, a dog, and the spider which is shown here. Others are simple lines that stretch for long distances. The lines were created by simply scraping away the top layer of iron oxide pebbles which coat the entire surface of the Nazca Desert, revealing lighter-colored earth underneath. Why were these lines and, perhaps more interestingly, how did people manage to create huge designs which can only be seen from high in the air? The area of the lines is over 200 square miles in size and some of the shapes are nearly 900 feet long.
