overty. Welfare. The very words are enough to make some people uneasy. No wonder it makes us uncomfortable: in the richest country in the world, poverty remains so constant that the very idea of ever eliminating it is seen as naive. Yet despite the overwhelming nature of American poverty, coupled with welfare, it remains the biggest issue of our age. Thousands of America?s brightest have tried and failed to come up with an easy fix for our country?s poverty problem. After taking a course on the subject and reading more books than I care to remember, I grow increasingly convinced that there is no solution to help the millions of Americans (37 million as of 2004) below the poverty line. But one thing I have noticed is that with the war on terror, political scandals, hunting accidents, and abortion bans, less and less attention is being paid to the people in this country that are struggling just to get by.
