ORANGE – A college student carrying two airsoft rifles for a school drama production prompted a nearly three-hour search of Santiago Canyon College after someone reported seeing a man with a gun near school grounds late Wednesday. The report came just hours after school officials at UCI announced they were looking for a possible gunman dressed in camouflage. Like the Santiago Canyon College incident, the UCI report turned out to be a student with an air rifle. Orange police received a call around 8 p.m. about the gunman on the campus of Santiago Canyon College at 8045 E. Chapman Ave., said Lt. Dave Hill of the Orange Police Department. Classes were just letting out at the time, he said. Police locked down the school’s library, and escorted students to their cars as officers searched for a gunman. Just after 11 p.m. an officer looking inside a truck saw what he thought was a gun magazine, Sgt. Dan Adams of the Orange Police Department said. While the officer was investigating further, a man carrying a vinyl guitar case came walking up. Inside the case were two airsoft rifles – realistic-looking gun replicas that shoot plastic pellets.
Police are searching an Orange County college campus after receiving reports of a possible gunman dressed in camouflage. Orange police Lt. Dave Hill says the department received multiple calls shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday of a person carrying a gun on the Santiago Canyon College campus. Hill says classes were letting out at the time and there was no evacuation ordered. Earlier Wednesday, there was a report of a possible gunman on the University of California, Irvine campus, 17 miles away from Santiago College. A UC-Irvine spokesman says a student wearing camouflage and toting an air pellet rifle was questioned by police but not arrested.
