Answer Owen Hart: Yes, he died directly following his fall. They waited until he was at the hospital to declare him dead, because WWE would like to claim that no one has ever died in a WWE ring, but he was pretty far gone right after the fall. Kane wore a mask because the storyline was that Undertaker burned their house down in a fire when they were young and thought Kane had died in the fire. The “real reason” they constructed the storyline that way was probably because Glenn Jacobs (the wrestler who plays Kane and has been Kane since day one) had just wrestled in WWE earlier that year without a mask as the fake Diesel.
