Absolutely. NV Energy has spent a considerable amount of time and resources investigating other coal generation options. In its 2003 IRP, NV Energy proposed and the Public Utilities Commission approved funds to explore coal options at both existing and greenfield sites. Executing on the 2003 IRP, the company proceeded with an examination of potential greenfield sites for coal development. In late 2003, NV Energy selected Lockwood Greene Engineers to perform a site screening study for both coal and gas-fired facilities. The company received Lockwood Greene’s report in 2004, which recommended a site north of Ely, in White Pine County, as the preferred site for a new clean coal development. Among the advantages of this site is the opportunity for the Companies to interconnect and exchange resources within the State for the first time, as well as to help drive renewable developments in Eastern Nevada.
