Maybe his decision to follow Islam was a result of changes he experienced in his life, rather than the other way around.

This isn’t Islam, it’s the americanized version that came out of prison culture. It doesn’t have much at all to do with the tenets of Islam, as far as I know. It’s just a rationalization people use to be totally obnoxious. I’d say it wasn’t the conversion that doomed the relationship, though. He was a jerk in the first place but kept it in check until the new religion gave him permission for stuff like total domination over his woman.
