Yes, not only did he exist but he does exist. His is a divine state of consciousness that parallels the Buddha, God consciousness being attained to faith, the perfect alignment of the 10 Sefirot and the realized indwelling spirit of the Christ. These different names all point to the same state of consciousness that is the divine love of God that can be realized in man. Being reborn is to realize this divine light of love within.
