Did Jane Seymour or her family ever live in East Knoyle?
In the 16th century there was a branch of the Seymour family living at Wulfhall, near Burbage, when Sir John Seymour was Warden of Savernake Forest. Henry VIII made a four day visit to Wulfhall to court Sir John’s daughter Jane. There is a village tradition that Henry travelled across the county with Jane to visit her relations in East Knoyle, but it has not been possible to prove this. However, it is possible that Henry & his entourage may have been entertained by a visit to the bull-baiting pits at the eastern end of the parish on Knoyle Ridge above Summerleaze. In 1888, following the death of Alfred Seymour of Knoyle House, the Knoyle property passed to his daughter Jane. She died in 1943, the last of the Seymours of Knoyle. There were, therefore, two branches of the Seymour family living in Wiltshire, both of whom had daughters called Jane. Lady Jane Seymour’s family did not live at East Knoyle, but she may have visited the village.
