Did James Meredith walk from Memphis to Mississippi?
James Meredith started his “March Against Fear” from Memphis, Tennessee, planning to walk to Jackson, Mississippi, to protest racism. He was shot shortly after starting, and had to be hospitalized. Other civil rights activists decided to take up his march when they heard he had been shot. When James Meredith was released from the hospital, he rejoined the “March Against Fear” and they arrived in Jackson, Mississippi the next day. He started in Memphis, Tennessee, arrived in Jackson, Mississippi, but did not walk the entire distance due to the shooting and hospitalization.
