Sometime after 1525, Henry VIII wanted an annulment from his first wife, Catharine of Aragon, so that he could marry Anne Boleyn. At this time, the Church of England was Roman Catholic under the control of the Pope in Rome Italy. But when the Pope refused to allow Henry to end his marriage to Catharine to marry Anne, Henry broke off communication with the Pope and changed the Church of England to the Anglican Church. The Anglican Church already existed in England at the time. So Henry did not start this religion. He just made it the official religion of England. It still remains as the Church of England today. It was Roman Catholic Priest Martin Luther, whose actions in 1517 started the long process that resulted in the Protestant Reformation.
