Did Guan Yu Actually Use the Green Dragon Crescent Blade?
Story has it that the best blacksmith made the Green Dragon Crescent Blade on a full-moon night. The moment the blade was going to be born, with rising wind and gathering clouds, 1780 drops of blood dripped from the air. Local wizard said they were blood of the green dragon, hence the name Green Dragon Crescent Blade. According to descriptions of later ages, the Green Dragon Crescent Blade and Guan Yu were always in each other’s company. It has become an indispensable image speaker of Guan Yu. However, did the Green Dragon actually exist in history? In fact, it is still a question whether Guan Yu used sword in battles. In late Han Dynasty, although people had started riding on horses with swords in battles, they were all using a kind of short weapon named Huanshoudao. Even if Guan Yu used sword, it should be a short weapon. The reason that people of later ages attached the legendary Green Dragon Crescent Blade to Guan Yu is to build Guan’s martial image.
