Did Granville Turkey Trot 2009 participants work off calories before meal?”
GRANVILLE — Amy Chrysler ran across the finish line of the fifth annual Granville Turkey Trot holding her six-month old nephew in her arms. “He was in the stroller for the first half, then I carried him because he was a cranky turkey,” Chrysler said of Jack Newman, who was dressed in a full-body turkey suit. “It was his Halloween costume, so we got our money’s worth.” The 5K Turkey Trot has grown each year, and this year it attracted a larger crowd than ever, organizer Bruce Westall said. “We’re estimating 1,200,” he said. “Last year, it was 750.” The race, which is sponsored by Jennie-O Turkey Store, raised at least $16,000 for the Food Pantry Network of Licking County this year. It raised $12,000 in 2008. Granville also hosts the Firecracker 5K on July 4 each year, although Westall said the Turkey Trot is a bit more laid back and features people running in Thanksgiving-themed costumes and with dogs and children. “It’s a good family thing to do Thanksgiving morning,” he said.
