Did Gospel music originate in Scotland? Saturday September 6, 2003 How on the heels of the British inventing Pasta and Napoleon being Scottish a new, but much more plausible, theory has been put forward by Professor Willie Ruff, Professor of music at Yale University. Ruff argues that the distinctive gospel style of an individual leading a choir/congregation through each line originated in the Free Church of Scotland. Slave owning Scots brought these practices with them when travelling to America, where they where picked up and adapted by the slave communities.
