Did Ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick pull another wink-wink on police reform appointment?
Detroit City Councilwoman Sheila Cockrel said today that former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s administration “moved heaven and earth to get” to get Sheryl Robinson Wood appointed as federal monitor overseeing Detroit Police Department reforms. Wood resigned abruptly on Friday in the face of what U.S. District Judge Julian Cook called evidence of “meetings of a personal nature” with then-Mayor Kilpatrick. “Was the mayor’s office doing another wink-wink?” Cockrel asked, per the Detroit News. Several members of the city council said the public could expect a hearing soon about Wood’s resignation and regular updates on the city’s progress towards meeting requirements of the federal consent decree Wood’s oversaw. Saul Green, a group executive for Mayor Dave Bing, will meet with the council today before answering any questions from the media.
