Ethiopian troops crossed over into southern Somalia in mid-June with tanks and heavy artillery to hit at rear bases of the fundamentalist Al-Itihad al-Islam group, according to field radio reports. In Mogadishu a spokesman for Al-Itihad said the fighting took place around the villages of Bohalgare, Dossai and Melko-Sarey in the border Gedo region.
