Did Don Revie and Brian Clough have any respect for each other?
Clough had respect for people who played football the correct way – by passing the ball, not the rough house tactics employed by Revie’s Leeds. I think they started off OK, both were Middlesborough men, but things deteriorated especially after Clough’s Derby became the opposite of Revie’s Leeds, not to mention the triumph of Derby in 1972 at Leed’s expense. Things went beyond the point of no return, when Revie slighted Clough by not attending a post match event at the Baseball Ground, which the latter had prepared. There were other things as well, the rivalry which started off in Revie’s favour and progressively turned to Clough’s direction. The fact that Clough succeeded where Revie did and beyond, in a style hailed by everyone, would have left the Don unamused. Moreover Cloughie for one, would never fail to rub the salt in, whenever the chance presented itself.
