David Ortiz was signed by the Seattle Mariners as an amateur free agent in 1992. He played in their minor league system and never made it up to play with the Mariners. After the 1996 season, he was traded to the Minnesota Twins in whose organization he stayed until after the 2002 season when he was released. He signed with the Red Sox as a free agent before the 2003 season.
