Maddie and David had a physical relationship at the end of third season, after she broke up with Sam Crawford, which in TV time, lasted for about a month. It ended when Maddie, guilt-ridden about the affair, ran to her parents home in Chicago to hide. It was there that she discovered that she was pregnant, but wasn’t sure who the father was. When she returned to L.A. four months later, David became bitter in some ways. They never fully resumed their romance, but tried to remain friends, which was difficult at the end. In “Lunar Eclipse”, they tried to get married in the 5 minutes left in the episode because the ABC exec, Sy, told them that the audience wanted romance, not friendship.
