Did Dave Whelans loyalty and a chance to save money spell doom for Chris Hutchings?
It is with little surprise that the sacking of Chris Hutchings was reported yesterday. It had taken Dave Whelan 12 games to figure out what most football watchers knew the day Hutchings was appointed. Choosing the number two that lasted 12 games as Bradford number one was a bad idea. We can only presume it a coincidence that Whelan and Geoffrey Richmond took exactly the same amount of time to twig; what is odd is that these two men put the fate of their Premier League clubs in such unsafe hands. On the face of it there can only be three reasons why Dave Whelan appointed Chris Hutchings. One: As a sense of loyalty to a great servant of his club. Two: He thought he was the right man for the job. Three: To save money by employing a cheap manager. Reason one might excite romantics but in reality it is laughable that a grimly hard-nosed businessman like Dave Whelan would make such a decision.
