Did coyote kill dog?
A Department of Natural Resources official says it’s unclear whether a coyote is responsible for the recent attack on a dog near Greenwood. Brian Horton lost his Jack Russell terrier, Ringo, to what he believed was a coyote attack Thursday morning. But Horton didn’t see the actual attack, instead finding the remains of his faithful companion after hearing him barking outside the previous night. “Without an eyewitness, I would suspect a wild dog before a coyote,” said DNR Lt. Col. Samuel Purvis. “It’s really uncommon for a coyote to attack a dog of any size. They tend to hunt small rodents and are a real skittish animal that would rather be away from people and homes when they hunt.” Purvis did confirm that more coyotes live around residential areas as the urban sprawl creeps into rural areas around the region. He also advices pet owners, especially those who live in rural areas, to keep dogs and other household pets up at night when most wild animals are out hunting.
