Did Captain Edward J. Smith go down with Titanic?
There are many theories about what happened to Captain E.J. Smith. Some say that he went back to his cabin to go down with the ship, some say he’s been living incognito for years and was a survivor. In the book Titanic – An Illustrated History by Don Lynch, it states that “with his ship going down Captain Smith turned and dived into the ocean,” (137) committing suicide. Ironically, Smith had become disenchanted with his misfortune that he had decided he would retire after the Titanic’s maiden voyage (Tibbals 8).
