The division was a moment in much longer series of running conflict of opinions and shifting positions and coalitions about several matters: — the future of British colonial power after the War, –Aden as a military base, –rise of Arab nationalism and prospects of Egyptian/Nasser’s ambitions toward the Suez Canal, –the aborted Brit/French/Israeli take-over of the Suez–the tangled mix of Western divisions and Arab divisions over Israel’s creation and recurring wars with its Arab neighbors, and, –not the least of it, oil politics and contests for influence over the Saudi rulers. There were always, as still, multiple sides to every issue east or west of Aden.
