VINTON — Has anybody seen an ostrich? That’s the question Bonnie and Dwight Sanders are asking as they continue to look for “Big Bird,” which escaped from his enclosure on Sunday. “We’ve had ostriches for a long time, but we’ve never lost one,” Bonnie said Wednesday. The bird was first noticed missing on Sunday as Dwight was driving his tractor and spotted something unusual. “He called and said ‘An ostrich just passed me,’” Bonnie said. “She’s the only ostrich we have, and kind of a local favorite.” Big Bird is best known to local elementary students who take field trips to the Sanders’ pumpkin farm. She said there was apparently a problem with the latch on Big Bird’s cage, and the ostrich pushed the gate open. “I’ve been hearing from numerous local people wanting to know if they could help find Big Bird. That’s sweet,” Bonnie said. Bonnie also received information about how to catch an ostrich from a friend who had found it on the Internet. “People have been so kind,” she said. Big Bi
