Did Barry ever cover the Rupert Holmes 1970s song, “Escape (The Pina Colada Song)”?
Answer Ah, no. “The Pina Colada Song” is Rupert Holmes’ own. To my knowledge, it has never been sucessfully covered. Although Barry put out an album of 70’s hits {Summer of ’78, Arista Records, 1996}, this song was not on it, and I don’t think Barry’s ever done it in concert. Interestingly, the song may be one of the very last hit songs of the 1970’s, as it didn’t hit the #1 spot on Billboard charts until December 22, 1979. It was #1 the following week, as well, and the week after that… it was the ’80s. As you may recall, the song was featured in the movie “Shrek” {Dreamworks, 2000}, and that’s the last we’ve heard of it. Thanks for the question!
